Gaspare Diziani, born in Belluno in 1689, began his studies in Belluno with Antonio Lazzarini and then left for Venice where he studied with Gregorio Lazzarini and later Sebastiano Ricci. In the second decade of the eighteenth century he was traveling in Germany, especially around Munich where in 1717 he painted four sopra portas in the conference room of the Residence Palace. In 1719 he was active in Rome but by 1720 he was already back in Venice where he entered the "Fraglia dei Pittori Veneziani", remaining in the Veneto for the rest of his life. The works of Gaspare Diziani can be found in the Church of San Rocco in Belluno, dated 1727, several paintings in the Sacristy of the Church of Santo Stefano in Venice, dated 1733, the frescoes in Palazzo Spineda in Treviso, dated 1748, and the frescoes in the Church of San Bartolomeo in Bergamo. Gaspare Diziani died in Venice in 1767.
This very vivid drawing can be compared to the large corpus of drawings by Gaspare Diziani conserved in the Correr Museum in Venice. These are “The two Orasmen”, “The Triumphal Entry into a City”, “Moses and the Serpent”, “The Martyrdom of Saint Giuliano” and the “Annunciation” (inv.5791a, 5649, 5617, 5549, 963). |
